Function / Content

This series consists of duplicate (written on printed form or copied out) applications for mining leases required under the "regulations relating to gold mining leases" [in the Northern Territory of South Australia] and the Northern Territory Mining Act from 1903. Applications 261 thru 276 show that mica mining was subject to the same requirements as gold. Application 42 is an example of an application being submitted when it could be proven that the original lease had been abandoned - this information is noted under general remarks. Application 38 is an example where the application also contains information referring to a grazing licence using the words "vide G.L. XXXX" or another application such as where application 37 refers to application 56. In some applications, such as in application 31, reference is made to a gold lease number and it has been noted in the general remarks that it is a renewal application. Sometimes the application is just noted with a NT [licence] number. The applications are dated, addressed to the Government Resident (or the Minister Controlling the Northern Territory from 8/04/1903 or the Warden of Arltunga Godfields from 1905) and signed by the applicant(s) as the registered holders of the particular block or miner's right. Each application has been stamped as granted with the date and an application number. Some of the applications have been also stamped by the minister's office. Other details recorded on the front face of the application include the full address of each applicant; extent of ground applied for and whether held under Miner's Right; name of each person who is occupying the land applied for; minimum number of men to be employed; precise locality and term for which lease required; amount of money proposed to be expended and in what manner the land is to be worked; whether the boundaries of the land applied for will include any water, public road or subject to any other rights; and general remarks.
